PupQuiet by ecohome ("PupQuiet", "the app") is made by ecohome ("ecohome", "we", "us"). It listens for thunder, fireworks and explosions through your device's microphone and quiets your speakers when it hears one, so your dog isn't startled.
- Sound is analysed on your device and never recorded, stored or uploaded. The app keeps only short numbers about what it heard, such as how loud a sound was and how sure it was that the sound was thunder.
- No account. You don't sign up for PupQuiet, and we don't know who you are.
- We only receive what you choose to send us. Everything the app keeps stays on your device. The one exception is feedback you send from the app, and the app shows you exactly what that contains before you send it.
- The app talks to your speakers and TV on your home network.
What the app handles and where it stays
| Information | Why | Where it stays | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live microphone sound | To recognise thunder, fireworks and explosions | Processed in memory on your device by Apple's built-in sound recognition. Never saved to a file and never sent anywhere. | Discarded within about a second |
| Sound readings (loudness, type of sound, confidence, timings) | To decide when to quiet your speakers, and to show you the event history | On your device only | Last 100 events in the history, until you clear it or delete the app |
| Diagnostic log (the same kind of readings, every tenth of a second; never audio), if you leave it on | To work out why a boom was missed or a dip happened | On your device only, unless you choose to attach it to a problem report | About the last 20 minutes, overwritten as it goes |
| Your settings, and how loud your room usually is | To remember how you want the app to behave and to tell booms from normal TV sound | On your device only | Until you change them or delete the app |
| Speaker and TV details (name, model, network address, device ID, and the pairing key a TV gives the app when you choose Allow) | To find and control your speaker or TV | On your device only | Until you choose another device or delete the app |
| The speaker's volume and mute state before the app quieted it | So the app can put your speakers back exactly as they were, even after a restart | On your device only | Cleared as soon as the sound is restored |
| Feedback you send: your message, your email if you give it, and, only if you leave those switches on, app details (version, system version, kind of speaker, settings), the brands and models of devices found, and recent history | To read it, reply if you asked, fix problems and decide which devices to support next | Sent to ecohome only when you tap Send. Stored by our hosting provider, Cloudflare, and emailed to our team. No device names, network addresses or audio are included. Sending by email instead goes through your own mail app. | Up to one year, then deleted automatically; sooner if you ask |
We don't receive any of this information, except feedback you choose to send.
What we don't do
- We don't record audio or keep any sound, speech or conversation.
- We don't try to recognise voices, words or people. The sound recognition only reports how likely a sound is one of a few types, such as thunder or fireworks.
- We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use it for advertising.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't use analytics or advertising tools in the app.
Permissions the app asks for
| Permission | Why | If you say no |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | To hear thunder, fireworks and explosions in the room | The app can't protect your dog. You can turn it on later in your device's Settings. |
| Local Network | To find and control your speaker or TV on your home Wi-Fi | The app can't reach your speaker or TV. |
| Keep screen awake (iPhone and iPad, only while protecting) | So listening continues while the device sits on its charger | Not a permission prompt. It stops when you stop protecting. |
While the app is listening, your device shows its normal microphone indicator.
Other companies involved
- Sonos. On your home network, the app reads and sets only the volume and mute of your Sonos speakers. Nothing goes through Sonos's cloud, and the app never asks for your Sonos account.
- Apple. Sound recognition uses Apple's built-in on-device technology. Tips you choose to leave are in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple: we never see your payment details or Apple ID, only Apple's anonymous sales totals. Apple's handling of app downloads, purchases and crash reports you choose to share is covered by Apple's privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy.
- Other speaker and TV brands. For the device you choose (LG, Roku, Samsung, Sony, Google Cast and Google TV, Denon and Marantz HEOS, Yamaha MusicCast, Bluesound and NAD, Bose SoundTouch, Onkyo and Pioneer), the app reads and sets only volume and mute, directly on your home network. Nothing goes through these companies' cloud services, and nothing about you is sent to them. An LG TV gives the app a pairing key when you choose Allow; the key stays on your device.
- Cloudflare. Our website and the feedback form run on Cloudflare. Cloudflare stores feedback you send on our behalf and processes the connection details any website receives, such as your IP address, under its privacy policy: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy. We use your IP address only to stop spam, in a scrambled form that is deleted within an hour, and never keep it.
PupQuiet is not made, endorsed or sponsored by Sonos, Apple or any other speaker or TV maker named here.
Children
PupQuiet is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices and rights
Because your information stays on your device, you control it directly:
- Clear the history in the app's settings, and turn off the diagnostic log there if you prefer.
- Turn off microphone or Local Network access at any time in your device's Settings.
- Delete the app to remove everything it stored.
The only personal information we may hold about you is feedback you sent us. Email [email protected] to see it, correct it or have it deleted, and we will do so within 30 days. If you live in California or another place with privacy rights laws, you can contact us with any other request and we will respond.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we will update this policy and its effective date. If a change means the app starts collecting new information, we will tell you in the app before it happens.
